Welcome to this open online course about the possible applications of the Quantum Computer and a Quantum Internet.
Whether you’re here to gain insights into what quantum computing and quantum communication is all about, identify applications that might be useful for your field of business, or connect with a global community of learners, we hope you find what you’re looking for in this MOOC.
Please note: this is an introductory course about the potential impact of quantum technologies. It is in the title: we try to explore how these technologies will change the world. We will not try to explain the scientific details about how these technologies work.
Just like the GPS in your mobile phone, you don’t need to understand the intricate details of how it works in order to grasp the potential of the technology.
We offer another course about the Building Blocks of a Quantum Computer. That course goes into the details of quantum technologies, and is an intermediate level course.
It is always a challenge to envision the future. At one point, inevitably, the future happens and then we get to look back at everyone who was laughably wrong. Although disputed, IBM President Thomas Watson is well-known for a famous prediction in 1943: “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.”
Before you start this course, you have to realize this: we can only look at the possibilities of the future at the current moment in time. Meaning that, between now and the introduction of the quantum computer, things might have completely changed and applications might have shifted to other fields.
Knowing this, we will take you on a journey to “only” see the applications we can envision now, explain them with our current perspective, and challenge you to try envision the future using questions, discussions, and assignments in this online course.
